Once upon a time, you needed a key to open a lock. Today, a tiny chip in a card or fob is all it takes. How does RFID technology work – and why is it ideal for securing valuables?
Technology is fundamentally changing the concept of security. What once required a physical key now works contactless, invisibly, and amazingly securely. RFID – Radio Frequency Identification – is one of those technologies that have revolutionized daily life without most people even realizing it.
You encounter RFID every day: when paying with your bank card, entering an office building, using public transit, or with a modern passport. The same technology that makes these applications possible now also protects your secret compartment.
What is RFID – and how does it work?
RFID stands for "Radio Frequency Identification" – identification via radio waves. An RFID system consists of two components: a reader and a transponder (tag or chip). The transponder contains a unique code – a kind of digital fingerprint – that can be read by the reader without the two parts needing to touch each other.
The basic principle is elegantly simple: The reader emits a weak electromagnetic field. If a transponder comes into this field, it is activated by the field, sends its stored code back, and the reader makes a decision: Is this code authorized? If yes, the lock opens.
How It Works in Detail
- The reader generates an electromagnetic field in the frequency range (usually 13.56 MHz for modern NFC systems)
- The chip in the transponder (card or fob) is supplied with energy inductively by the field – it doesn't need its own battery
- The chip transmits its unique identification code to the reader
- The reader checks if the code is authorized in its database
- If there is a match, the lock opens – the entire process takes milliseconds
An RFID transponder has no battery, no moving parts, no wear. It works just as reliably after ten thousand openings as it did the first time.
NFC: RFID for the 21st Century
NFC (Near Field Communication) is a further development of RFID technology and operates over shorter distances (maximally a few centimeters). NFC is the basis for contactless payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay – and for modern lock systems like the RFID locks integrated into HausVersteck products.
The key advantage of NFC over classic RFID: An even shorter reading range means even higher security. To read an NFC chip, you have to hold it directly up to the reader – random reading from a distance is practically impossible.
Is RFID Secure? What You Should Know
A valid question: Can an RFID chip be cloned? The honest answer: Theoretically yes, practically extremely difficult with modern systems. Older RFID cards (first generation) actually had security vulnerabilities. Modern NFC systems use encrypted communication and dynamically changing codes, which makes cloning nearly impossible.
The relevant benchmark isn't absolute security – which doesn't exist – but comparison to alternatives. An NFC-secured lock is more secure than a mechanical lock (which can be picked with a Dietrich pick), more secure than a combination lock (which can be observed), and more secure than no lock at all.

A mechanical lock on a secret compartment has a conceptual contradiction: The lock makes the compartment visible. A keyhole, a lock cylinder – these are clues that something is being secured here. The strength of a hidden storage spot lies in its inconspicuousness, and a visible lock undermines exactly that.
An RFID lock, however, is invisible. There is no keyhole, no cylinder, no mechanical indication of a lock. The compartment opens with a touch that has no recognizable meaning to outsiders. Security comes from two angles: No one suspects there's a compartment, and even if someone finds the compartment, there's no obvious opening mechanism.
